Rescue shelter in Australia needs help

AFTER four years and more than 10,000 saved bunnies, SA Rabbit Rescue is in danger of folding.

Soaring living costs have crushed the volunteer organisation, run by Smithfield bunny lover Sally Arnold.

"I don't want to lose our home because of the work we do with the bunnies but we're very close to it," Ms Arnold said.

"It costs about $280 to run the service every week and between mortgage repayments and council rates, it's getting harder and harder to make ends meet."

Sick friend cut up our beloved pet (UK)

A DISTRAUGHT couple today appealed for help in catching sick yobs who decapitated their beloved pet.

John Williams and his partner Catherine Parkman found their headless pet rabbit Thumper lying dead in their garden. Police today said sadistic thugs severed the rabbit's head and then took the head with them, leaving the couple to find only their pet's body and empty hutch.

Today, Mr Williams, of West Park Drive, near Stanley Park, said their seven grandchildren will be heartbroken.

Rabbit saves lives

Chocolay Township family has their pet rabbit to thank for saving their lives.

Chrissy Andel-Garlow and her family were sleeping when her rabbit, Colby, woke her up at their home on M-28 in Chocolay Township around 5 a.m. Friday.

"At night he usually hangs upstairs," Chrissy said, "but he came down real fast, and if he hadn't, I wouldn't have woken up because even my husband slept through it."

8 Rabbits seized from South SF Home

South San Francisco (BCN)

And then there were 80.

The Peninsula Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals reported Friday a South San Francisco man who obtained two rabbits about two years ago for his son's school project didn't know what to do when the rabbits kept multiplying so he just tried to take care of them.

According to PHS/SPCA spokesman Scott Delucchi, the owner didn't know the animals could be spayed or neutered so he built a hutch in the yard of a home on Myrtle Avenue and provided food and water to the growing herd of bunnies.

Welfare warning on Easter Bunnies

by BBC News

Animal welfare workers have appealed to parents not to buy young children pet rabbits this Easter. The Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) said it had seen increasing numbers of bunnies dumped after the holidays.

SSPCA centres were overwhelmed with 690 abandoned pet rabbits last year - up by more than 100 on the previous year. SSPCA vet Ian Futter said: "Rabbits do not make ideal pets for young children."

Super Rabbit 2006!

Finally we can write our first column! We were asked a while ago by the webmaster if we wanted to write something on this site, but we (well just Ruth actually) first had to learn to type English.

Let’s introduce ourselves then ok Bram? We are Bram and Ruth, the most famous rabbits in the Netherlands, we even have our own weblog. Nohooo I can hear you all say Roet, but that’s the black stuff that comes out of the chimney! My name is Ruth R-U-T-H. Calm down Ruth, can’t you hear that they say my name wrong too, they call me Brem but that’s some kind of bush over here. Never mind it’s their problem, not ours! Let’s continue introducing ourselves shall we?

Off the streets of Abuse to A Forever Paradise!!

The day I layed my eyes on a big adorable white bunny I new from that point on I was going to be his forever mommy, hero and rescuer. With his matted fur, infested ear mites, skinny body, and bleeding skin infection he still never gave up on himself and his will for survival. Wilbur my New Zealand White rabbit was brought into my home. He was left outside by himself through rain, wind, the scortching heat and even a hurricane! His previous owners just simply did not want him anymore so they let him outside on the strets to survive on himself. Completely disgusted I had taken on the comitment to save this loveable boy! He needed his ears flushed, medication for his bitten up ears, and special medication for his bleeding skin.Scared to death of humans because of know attention throughout his life he still never ever tryed to bite once, even going through tests & special medicated bathes daily for weeks.Wilbur healed slowy and so did his heart. All he needed was some TLC! I can even explain how I felt the first time he did his first binky or the time he ran over to me asking for pets. Its something I will never forget. Wilbur is now spoiled rotten!! I had him for over a year now and he is my pride and joy! He taught me to never give up even when it seems impossible. We kinda fixed each other, I saved his life and Wilbur took my heart into a world of understanding and patients. We both new it was in each other. If I can send a msg out to anyone about Wilburs life, it would be to teach people that rabbits are a big commitment and you cant juss put a wonderful life outside! They will surely not survive. So next time you see a little or big furball hopping outside scared and lonely remember Wilburs story. You might not beable to save the world but you can save one life for sure! Love, Morgan & Wilbur

Abandoned Dwarf Rabbit

One day, when I was on my morning walk, I went by the park. Well, I was walking along and then i saw a box. Of coarse I did not think it was a big deal, but then somthing strang happend, THE BOX MOVED!!!! So I got curious. Walking over to the box I thought "what could be in there." So I opened up the flab and the was the cutest dwarf rabbit i had ever seen.

Quickly I closed the box, picked it up, and ran home. A few hours after I found it we (my dad and I) went to petco to get a cage and some supplies. My mom was not so happy that there was a bunny in the house though. Well now I have had it a week and went to the vet today. It is a perfactly heathy male rabbit. Now he has a name, Lohgan (pronounced low-gan), and we have spent 7 on just his essential supplies!!!!!!! The vet we took him to was nice and gave us a discount form to . Here is a picture of Lohgan in his new home.

Simon, a retired Easter Bunny

My husband and I had wanted a house rabbit for a long time, and had been actually thinking of contacting a breeder at first.

When we were doing our research, we saw how many sweet, loveable, unwanted bunnies there were, and we knew that the breeder was the wrong thing to do. (Also we were uncomfortable with what we saw of the photos of the breeders farm.)

Unfortunately for us, (but fortunately for the bunnies) there were not any available bunnies for adoption in our area. (We live in Montreal, Canada, not a big rabbit-town.)

We were making preparations to eventually drive out to the US or the next Province over to find an ideal bunny, when we got an e-mail from a friend who was doing work on a local shelters website. The e-mail was entitled: "Is This Your Bunny?"

And so we met adopted Simon, a handsome doe-cloured French lop. He was a retired easter bunny who had been abandoned when he got too large. He was already litter-trained, and very well-behaved.

We have had him for a year and a half now, and is such a success, we are thinking of getting him a companion!

Anyways, he has made my and my husbands life happier with his crazy hoppy bunny ways, and we would both wholeheartedly encourage anyone who was thinking of adopting to do so!

Jamie, my black flemish giant boy

On eight december 2003 Jamie finally found a place at my home. Jamie is a beautiful black flemish giant (neutered) male. He is 2 years old now and had been dumped on the street. How long he was wandering around, no one knows for sure, but it must have been for quite some time.

When people from a rescue center did find him, he did have four severe wounded feet, one of his hind feet did have a huge hole in it. His coat was matted and full of mites, and he was also thin and very depressed. I was having a look at the site of this animal sanctuary, and saw a photo of Jamie, the people from the sanctuary did ask for someone who wanted to give this black flemmie a caring and loving home. I did respond immediately, cause Jamie had captured my heart, I really wanted to make this poor flemmie a very happy flemmie again.

When Jamie was strong enough and the mites where gone, they took him to the vet to be neutered. A week later they brought Jamie to my place. Jamie was really craving for attention. He really loved it when I took him on my lap and brushed and petted him, while I talked to him. Jamie also followed me around like a little puppy dog, he is the sweetest and friendliest bunny I have ever seen. Especially when I bear in mind that he had been dumped and did have a very hard time.

I also did take care of his feet. The hindfoot with the hole in it was slowly getting better, the wounds on the other three feet where closed and healing very well. I decided to give Jamie some time to feel at home and to get a little rest, he really needed some extra care and attention too. Slowly he started to recover, but he still was very quiet.
When Jamie was looking a bit better, he was allowed to stay a longer time out of his large cage. He loved it, and he seemed a little happier, but still there was that sad look in his eyes. So I gave Jamie a large cuddly bunnytoy, he loved it, he groomed it and lay down next to it.

Two days before his birthday (february 15th) I decided to take Jamie downstairs to the room where my two other flemmies Rusty and Sparky live. They where both in their cage,so Jamie could explore the room safely.
He really enjoyed it, and finally he got to the cage with the two flemmies, they did sniff eachother, then Jamie hopped away again, later he came back and they started sniffing again, and then he and Rusty started licking eachother, soon Sparky also joined. To me it was clear that my flemmies would behave in a very friendly way to eachother, so I took both flemmies out of their cage. At first they did mount eachother a few times, but soon all three flemmies where grooming eachother, and finally they lay next to eachother as if they where friends for years.

Ofcourse I made some photos of all this. I did upload photos on the community webshot site. Jamie and his cuddly toy is in the album "more flemish pics" and the three flemmies together can be seen at the " three flemish giant" album.
You can find those albums by following this link or click here for album nr. 2 on my website.

One thing kept bothering me, Jamie did not gain much weight and the wounds on his foot would not heal very well. They seemed better at one time, and then suddenly they started bleeding again. The reason why came as quite a big shock to me. I was brushing Jamies coat one morning. Because the hair on his back and round his tail was still molting and also had a tendency to start matting.
I did feel several small lumps on his lower back on one site of his body. I had not felt these lumps before. When I did have a closer look, I saw that some of those lumps where small abcesses and others where small inflamed spots. One of those abcesses did burst open and there was a tooth paste like pus coming out and also a small lead pellet!.

It turned out that all those tiny abcesses and inflamed spots did conceal lead pellets. I was very shocked about this, it meant that during the time that Jamie has been dumped on the streets someone did shoot at him.
The X-ray of Jamies back showed several lead pellets in his body. All lead pellets where removed (15 of them). And Jamie had to start treatment for lead poisoning, the reason why his foot would not heal.

I was very shocked about this, the first day. I could not talk about it without getting emotional. Poor Jamie, dumped on the street and being shot at. And despite all horrible things that happened to him, Jamie still is the most friendly bunny I ever came across. He is a very special bunny to me, and it breaks my heart to know that he has suffered a lot. Now a half year later, Jamie is doing fine and he is feeling very well again. He is happy and has found some bunny friends and human friends as well, and he also still loves his cuddly toy bunny very much too.

Bientje, my flemish giant

I was looking at an internetsite one day where they sell a lot of things and also animals (unfortunately!). So now and then I take a look at that site, to see if people do not sell the rabbits at an too early age. Then I saw an advertisement in which someone was offering a white, red eyed Flemish Giant.

My bloodpressure was rising, because just 2 weeks before that, I had lost my dear white, red eyed Flemish Giant Bonkie.
I looked at the picture, and my heart broke. I saw the same sad eyes as Bonkie had, when I got her from the shelter (Bonkie was dumped in the woods and was ill).

I phoned the man (a little bit pissed) and asked him some things. To my surprise, he was very friendly and did seem to care a lot about this giant. I told him I would call back. I was a little bit confused. Maybe I was wrong, maybe she was a happy rabbit.

However, I could not get her out of my mind, so I called back the next morning and got his wife on the phone and she told me the story: Bientje (thats her name) had been very mistreated by her former owner. That guy didn clean her hutch, which was also far too small for a giant and her waterbottle was completely filled with algees. She didn receive love or attention at all. They had rescued Bientje but were unable to keep it.

When I heard that story I thought: I was right about those sad eyes! and told the lady that we were coming to pick her up immediately. We drove 500 km all together to rehome that lovely giant and thats quite a distance in Holland!

When we got home, I put Bientje in my bedroom and was up all night talking to her and get her to calm down as she was rather restless. The next morning I put her in a bigger hutch outside (Bonkies former hutch), When I came back after half an hour I was shocked! She had given birth to one death baby! Poor Bientje, she was pregnant, and because of all the stress and mistreatment it was born dead.

We took her to the vet and he examined her. She was very stressed, he said, but other than that, she was healthy.

After that, we took good care of her, but she showed "abnormal" behaviour. She was very stressed, couldn sit still, was running, then lying down, running again, eating a little bit of food, etc. It went on and on, she was completely out of breath constantly! I asked other rabbit-owners about it and they told me all the same: Bientje is just very happy to be with you, and doesn know what is happening to her. Now she is able to run and she gets lots of love and attention, so she wants to enjoy it every minute of the day!

Now, a few weeks later, shes still euforic. She is running around my legs, she wants to make babies with my hand (haha) and she is really enjoying life!! For the first time in her life!
When shes used to her new home, she can choose a nice ex-male rabbit to live with! I hope she lives a long and happy life with us!!

Ingrid en Bientje
(The Netherlands)

Hi, I'm Dandy, I'm a houserabbit

I've been living with my 2 foots now for about 3 months, but its taken me this long to figure out how to get out of the cage, switch on the computer, and lets face it, would you like trying to type with these paws?

I live with my best girl (Flopsy) who is just so.......... well you know what I mean. Before I came here, life really was not so great. I have vague memories of a pet shop, and then a tiny filthy wooden hutch at the bottom of a garden. Then I spent a whole year at the Bunny Camp Sanctuary in Bradford. There were very nice to me, but its not like having a place of your own. Buns would be brought in, and people would adopt them, but for some reason, no one ever wanted me.

At the start of December 2002, the Bunny Camp had an open day. I did not know at the time, but Flopsy (who I had not met back then) had just lost her sister Blackberry a few days before. Flopsy was brought in to Bunny Camp by some 2 foots, and they introduced us WELL, it was lust at 1st sight let me tell you baby!!!
The 2 foots took me home with Flopsy, and that is now where I live... I can here someone coming, must go.

Dandy
(the white rabbit on the pic)

Want to know more about me?
Well, I have an own journal which can be found here:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/dandybun/
