Tiny Dutch baby girl found injured and near death

Posted in Life in a Shelter by marie on Mon, 2007-03-26 18:55

I received the call around noon from a frantic person who had found a tiny baby that was seriously injured - This extremely ill Dutch baby was found abandoned in her back yard -the baby bunny was in shock and unable to move. The bunny is very lucky that she was found -just in time- and saved. We estimate that the baby had only hours to live without treatment.

Camille

The person who found her located our number as she had just picked up the debut edition of Silicon Valley tails at a nearby shop (that ad just happened to have come out the day before!). Our big blue ad caught her attention. This good Samaritan had no idea what to do or where to take her new found desperately injured baby bunny. So she called for our help. We referred to nearby vets and quickly discovered no one was able to see the baby. After discussing all options -quickly- it was decided she needed to come to us ASAP. The family raced her all the way to Santa Cruz where the Haven could provide help.

The baby is about 4-weeks old & cannot use her front leg at all, as it is completely infected and too swollen to move. She was in great pain. She has several apparent cat or some other animal bites around her leg and on her ears.

Special thanks to the caring family that brought her all the way to the Haven to get her medical support & rescue.
The baby arrived in a small plastic tub, kept warm as requested. On arrival our foster mom Melanie fed her, gave her fluids and warmed her- She was so cold. After treating her for shock she was checked for injuries. She had many; As we looked at her ear injuries, part of her ear actually fell off. It had been bitten so deeply it was severed

Then she was taken by our special care nurse and volunteer driver to the first emergency vet close by that was able to treat exotics. Camille as she was nicknamed, was taken to a local vet, Dr Ryle for emergency care. She was examined, x rayed and placed on appropriate meds, fluids and supportive care. She is now receiving critical care support at our primary med site in Santa Cruz. She has suffered such horrific injuries, the vet was not even able to conduct a full exam -The tiny baby was too ill and the vet recommended rest, treatment for shock, fluids, pain meds and antibiotics then in a few days the leg injuries can be addressed.

At her next appointment, Monday, the vet will hopefully be able to treat the leg. It looks like the rest of her ear will be ok. Send your love and healing wishes. If you want to help with some of her medical cost to save that leg please go to our web site and use pay pals. The Rabbit Haven or send your check to:

Camille will need regular medical care, help to beat the infection and abscesses on her leg, then she will need to have the leg itself repaired.
Please help if you can.
